THE CONSERVATIVE VIEW

A NATION OF LAWS?

I would like to give you a little food for thought. How long would a local town or city tolerate someone speeding in their town on a daily basis? When caught the first time if you’re lucky you might just get a warning, but after that you would be pressing your luck. If any of us continued to disregard the speed limits of the town we would soon face some stiff punishment and hefty fines. I agree that sometimes lawmakers have good intentions and pass laws that are bad, but for the most part our system of laws is designed to protect our country and it’s citizens. Our nation has experienced nothing short of an all out invasion of illegal aliens. We have had laws for years that were supposed to have an orderly system to allow people to come to our country. It is also true that our federal government has ignored those laws and let the people of this country down. Just last year the legislature approved HB 1804, Oklahoma took the lead in the nation to combat the problem of illegal immigration. The people of Oklahoma overwhelmingly supported the bill; we understood the need to have some order with this problem. Now there are various groups that want to repeal or severely weaken HB 1804.

A group calling itself “A Better Way Oklahoma” appears ready to launch an all-out attack on the state’s new immigration law. They claim that there will be an exodus of 250,000 Hispanics from Oklahoma in the coming years as a result of HB 1804. They also contend that it will cause a huge impact on the economy of Oklahoma. Any law will have an impact on our economy, but what will be the impact if we don’t do anything?

Before any business owner hires a new employee, usually he will interview the potential employee. Many times references are required; past work history and a host of other information is collected. All business owners know that hiring the wrong person can cause many problems. The people of this country deserve to know if the people coming into this country are decent hard working people or are they hardened criminals.  The supporters of HB 1804 aren’t promoting treating the illegals in an inhuman manner. They  only want the people coming into our country to respect our home and obey the rule of law.
